After 8 very fun years, it's time for Rescued Books to close. I have such mixed emotions, but my goal of helping to save the books from being shredded or thrown away has just about been met. I do have some remaining books but there are so many used book sales as fundraisers in our area that I'm sure they will continue to be reread.

I'm planning to officially remove all the book inventory on May 1 2009, so after May 1st, no one will be able to buy books from the site. I will leave the site and shopping cart operable until then.

RescuedBooks - 5th Birthday - Big Changes

Announcing 5th Birthday and Big Changes for RescuedBooks

In honor of our 5th birthday (how time flies) and in the spirit of the
PaperBackSwap and the Freecycle Network, all the "rescued" library
books on the site will now be free. You will pay only shipping for those.
They will be marked FREE in the price column on the catalog pages.
Over half of the books on the RescuedBooks site are the "rescued"
library books.

All nonlibrary books will remain $1 or $2. Most of the nonlibrary books
are from my personal collection and are in good to excellent condition.

My only request to you is that all books remain intact or in circulation.
The intent is that no book be thrown in the trash or be destroyed. Please
feel free to resell, trade, or give away the books.

To save cost, order history tracking will be phased out so that the library
books can be offered at no charge. When the software license expires in
April, it will not be renewed. Your orders will still be shipped with USPS
delivery confirmation, though, so you will be able to track the status of each order.

Additionally, a 50 cent handling fee will be added to cover packaging costs
so that the library books can be offered at no charge.

"Post Your Book Wants" Message Board Problem

I found a slight glitch when reopening the site. The setting for the message board that I use for "Post Your Book Wants" got reset, so all the messages that were posted were lost.

I've kept the message board open, but have changed it to a moderated list (meaning that anyone can post a message, but it must be approved prior to being seen publicly).

I'm debating whether to keep this feature and would appreciate your input by voting to keep the "post your book wants" message board or not.

Possible Shipping Delay 1 - 2 Days

The good news is that the leg is not as bad as we originally thought. It is either a torn muscle or tendon, and the orthopedic surgeon has prescribed treatment of weight-bearing exercises, and no cast is needed (thank heavens !!)

With help from my family, I'm able to process and ship orders. For larger orders, there may be a 1-2 day delay in shipping, but I'll make every effort to get them shipped to you as quickly as possible. As usual, I will let you know by email about the availability of the books and when you can expect the order to ship (next day or 1-2 day delay).

Page Name Change to RescuedBooksFree

Since so many of the free paperbacks have already been taken, I decided to merge the free paperbacks and the free coloring and puzzle backs pages. The site navigation now says "Free Books" and those are all listed on one page.

The free software CD's and VHS videos will be added throughout July and August, so please continue to be patient.

Also please note that most of these items are from my (and my children's) personal collections), so once they're taken, I will not be replenshing items for the "free" portion of the site. Once the availability of free items begins to dwindle, I'll offer them through the main "RescuedBooks" site as I do now.

NEW - Newsletter and Mailing List

We've had a glitch with our mailing list provider, and I've lost everyone who had joined my mailing list. Instead of getting upset, I'm using this as an opportunity to try something new. I've decided to use Yahoo Groups to send my newsletters to those who join the group. This will be new for me since I've only sent 1 or 2 e-mailings in my 4 years. My goal is to send newsletters at most every 3 months but no more frequently (unless you tell me that you want more newsletters !!) You can always access this blog for updated site news.

NEW - View Order History

Another new feature has been added for RescuedBooks customers !! Now you can securely view your order history and status here.

When you place an order, you will receive an email with an order history password. From our site, you can enter your email address and password and view all orders that you have placed using that email address.

For orders placed before 4/1, in order to retrieve your password you will need to use the "Email Password" form. Just enter your email address and you will receive an email with your order history password.

As of 4/1, all new orders will automatically be available to view.
Orders placed from 1/1 through 2/28/2005 have been added to the database and are available to view. I'm adding the March orders to the database and will post here when they are completed.

I've always enjoyed an order history feature at other sites where I shop, so I'm very proud and happy to be able to provide it for you.

NEW Shipping Rates Based on Book Weight

Now you can order from all 3 RescuedBooks sites together !! The shipping has been changed so that it's based on the book weights instead of the book prices. This way you won't be overpaying for items which weigh less. Also, I can keep the lower prices i.e. trade paperbacks for $1 and Reader's Digest volumes for $1 and have the shipping rates be more accurate.

All shipping rates are based on USPS media mail including delivery confirmation.
For international orders, your shipping rates will be discussed with you before your order is finalized.

I'm always looking for ways to make your visits and shopping experiences with the RescuedBooks sites easier. I have some other ideas of features to implement which will now be easier since all 3 sites use the same shopping cart features.

It's official !! RescuedBooksFree is now open !! There are 4 categories: paperback books, coloring books, VHS videos, and software CD's. I only have inventory listed so far in the paperback books. These are mass market paperbacks which typically retail for $6.99 or less.

I'll be adding items in the other categories very soon, so watch here and I'll post when there are updates.

The only limitation (for US orders) is free shipping coupons are not valid for orders with only free items (which makes sense as you're only paying shipping for the items). However gift certificates can be used at all 3 sites.

For international orders, you will be contacted about shipping options and prices before your order is finalized.

Book Categories Changed (RescuedBooksKids)

I streamlined the book categories on RescuedBooksKids by adding Beginning Chapter books to the Beginning Readers section. Plus I combined Young Adults and Junior Readers since age ranges on these books are completely subjective. However, if a library had a YA sticker on the book, I did designate it as "Young Adult" in the book table.

Trade Paperbacks Added to Site

I've added a page for trade paperbacks on the site and these will sell for $1.50 or less. Trade paperbacks are larger (sizewise) and cost significantly more than mass market paperbacks.

I'm still working on the RescuedBooks Free site for the mass market paperbacks and will have this ready soon (of course I'll have a blog post when that site is fully loaded with books).

"Top" Button Fixed

"Post Your Book Wants" Board Changes

We're changing hosts and format of the "post your book wants" message board for several reasons.

1. To give you better privacy, this new format will require an email address and name for registering. I know that creating an account to post a message can sometimes be aggravating, so this is the simplest message board I could find. However, now you don't have to post your email address in the message so that others can contact you (unless you want non-members to contact you).

2) The previous host was having server problems again. (ugh !!)

3) The previous host didn't have some of the formatting that I prefer (date and time stamps, active threads at the top of the list, and others).

All the previous posts were deleted, so please feel free to post again if you're still looking for a book.

Registration is easy. Just a name and an email address is all you need.

Again, the purpose for the board is to have our readers help each other find books at reasonable prices. It would be very easy for me to jump into some of the online book searches and let you know that I found a copy of your book for $50, but that would be contrary to the whole purpose of RescuedBooks.

The reason for this is -
faster page loading for you
faster sorting for you (shorter, smaller pages sort much faster)

New Shopping Cart with More Features

RescuedBooks has changed shopping carts to give more flexibility and more options. The new shopping cart will now accept coupons, allow us to use discounts, give free books, and more.

Plus it still interfaces directly with PayPal so you can use it as a payment option. For those who don't wish to use PayPal, we can still accept credit cards securely.

More Menu Options

Our host for the mailing list and message board is having server problems, so we've found new applications and have been installing these.

Until we're finished, you'll see some pages with the new version (smaller fonts) and some with the old version.

Also, we're adding a "monitor for changes" option. This service will alert you when any changes are made to that page, i.e. books added. You can monitor any page individually (if you like Nonfiction but don't prefer Biography, etc).
